SHINYRIBS
American southern soul, swamp-funk band Shinyribs comes to Taos Mesa Brewing this June! Shinyribs is a sprawling nine, sometimes 10-piece cast, but ultimately it is the funky brainchild of Kevin Russell, who grew up in Beaumont, TX, and Shreveport, LA, the cradle of the swamp pop and bayou R&B sounds that drip off his fingers like honey and hot sauce nowadays. Think Gulf Coast meets Muscle Shoals with strong pop-song structures. The evolution of Shinyribs came about when Kevin began playing a solo residency under that moniker - after an incident involving Russell buying a homeless woman a plate of ribs in a Houston club in the mid-2000s. “I was already a lover of New Orleans R&B from the ‘40s and ‘50s,” says Russell. “That music is some of my favorite music ever. Suddenly I realized I could play that style with these horns.” The new album Transit Damage was produced by Grammy winner Steve Berlin who helped shape the record and pushed Kevin to reach beyond the party band specs. The band’s celebratory bayou funk/R&B/soul sounds are leavened with Russell’s most personal songwriting yet, while still retaining the Shinyribs trademark need to get up and dance.
NIK PARR + THE SELFLESS LOVERS
Nik Parr + The Selfless Lovers is a piano-driven rock n’ roll group from Austin, Texas. The band tours nonstop, performing over one hundred and fifty shows per year around the country. Nik leads the band on vocals, saxophone and as a throwback rockin’ piano man while also working the crowd and bringing blistering energy to the live set with lots of sweat and saxophone solos. The band features Keegan Flynn on guitar, Daniel Warner on drums and Evan Durr on bass. The group’s vintage sound is inspired by a mix of 60’s and 70’s rock n’ roll from The Rolling Stones to Jerry Lee Lewis to ZZ Top and Bruce Springstein to the early Fitz and The Tantrums tunes.
Keep your eyes out for their new EP “American Lover Boy” coming soon, recorded live on tape in Memphis at the legendary Sam Phillips studios (Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash).
