PHOSPHORESCENT
On Revelator, the latest Phosphorescent album, Matthew Houck confronts emotional exhaustion and life’s quiet upheavals with raw introspection and evolving sound. After years marked by major personal changes, including fatherhood, illness, and relocation, Houck emerges from pandemic dormancy with a record that’s both ethereal and grounded. Unlike the more autobiographical C’est La Vie, Revelator floats through murkier emotional terrain, shaped by ambient dread and fleeting moments of clarity. Born from writing retreats and full-moon cover sessions, the album wrestles with domestic tensions, self-doubt, and existential grief—yet ultimately finds strength in vulnerability. It culminates in “To Get It Right,” a sweeping closer that acknowledges pain while affirming a quiet resilience, signaling a hard-won sense of renewal.
RICH RUTH
Water Still Flows - Released June 21, 2024 via Third Man Records, Water Still Flows is the latest album from Rich Ruth, the instrumental project of Nashville multi-instrumentalist Michael Ruth. Blending ambient, spiritual jazz, post-rock, and heavy drone-metal, the album reflects both emotional catharsis and creative exploration. Written largely on the road, the seven-track LP captures the tension between anxiety and calm, restlessness and meditation. Featuring collaborators like harpist Mikaela Davis and saxophonist Sam Que, the songs build from tranquil loops to intense, transcendent peaks. Recorded in Ruth’s home studio, it showcases his evolving sonic vision and collaborative spirit, while reaffirming music as his grounding force.
