JONATHAN RICHMAN

“The music we're doing now works well in quiet places like theaters and performing art centers. We still don't use a program or a set list so we don't know what we'll do until we do it. Please do not expect old songs. Many singers my age do a retrospective; this show is not like that. It's mostly stuff made up in the last 3 and 4 years. Some of the songs presented might be in different languages; this is not to be esoteric or clever, it's because the different languages help me express different feelings sometimes. One last thing, my idea of a good show has nothing to do with applause. It's about if all the songs I sang that night were ones that I felt.” -Jonathan

Jonathan Richman is an American singer-songwriter who has been active in the music industry since the 1970s. He is known for his unique songwriting style that combines simple yet catchy melodies with quirky, humorous, and insightful lyrics that often focus on love, relationships, and human nature. He has released over 20 studio albums with a remarkable mix of rock, pop, folk, and punk influences.

Richman's approach to live performance is regarded as exceptional and remarkable. He prioritizes intimacy with his audience, creating a setting where they can connect personally with him and the music. His shows never have a setlist, and he improvises his set as he goes along. He sets no expectations for his fans, and he generally prefers playing new songs instead of old ones. Richman continues to tour and release music well into his seventies.

Throughout his career, Richman has earned much critical acclaim for his works. According to Nashville Scene, "Richman is one of America’s most unique and dynamic songwriters." Meanwhile, The New York Times praised his songwriting for having "rhymes worthy of Ogden Nash." He has also been acknowledged for his ability to cultivate an intimacy with his audience, something that is almost extinct in modern music.
